Summary: World War II rages across Europe, but Jarek and Jensen are out of the fight - two downed RAF pilots who find themselves unexpected bunkmates in Stalag Luft III. Determined to escape, they spend the years behind barbed wire contributing their own unique skills to a daring mass escape attempt. Finally, on a cold, moonless night in 1944, they're among the dozens of POWs who make it out before the tunnel is discovered. Hitler is enraged and orders a ruthless manhunt, with orders to execute the recaptured airmen.

As Jarek and Jensen begin the long, dangerous journey home, secrets come out. They get separated.

After the war, Jarek tracks down his orphaned 7-year-old niece Rosie and tries to make a home with her in a Polish Resettlement Camp in England. But he's still haunted by the choice Jensen made.

First comment! High fives!

Did you see this Jared interview? As part of his answer to: If you do make the jump to movies, are there any roles you're shooting for? -

Jared said in part: ...actually, my father's a big war buff, so I became a big war buff -- anything having to do with World War II, I'd love to be a part of. I'd love to do a war movie in some way, shape or form.

Makes me envision this all the harder! *g*

You've always done so much to help folks with eBook type reading options. I think I saw your post earlier asking authors to do that if possible, so I took your advice!

I'm glad you did! And you took the easiest option which is hosting to the A03... :) It's a lot of work creating four different formats on top of what's posted online. I'm so glad they added the download as an ebook option to the archive. I'm not sure when I'll have time to read your story with how much homework I have but hopefully after this summer session next summer session won't be as crazy. :)

Yah!

Hi there! Loved - completely and absolutely loved - your story. The amount of research you must have done for this is amazing and yet since I cried over large parts of it, the facts never took away from the emotional impact of the story. Every bit was understated and elegant and the characters rang completely true. The ending was so very bitter- sweet but somehow it seems so fitting an end that I can't really imagine it any other way (even though I hate that Jarek died so young!) Even the heartbreak at all the sadness in the lives of each of the characters seems a fitting tribute to the subject and the deftness with which you've handled it. Its so hard to think of people going through things like this and to me, a story like yours helps us remember and honor them and their lives.

Thank you! I haven't admitted this to anyone else, because I don't think too many readers are that familiar with the movie, but I know you would appreciate that Jarek is inspired to a degree by the character played by Charles Bronson!

So somehow I've forgotten my password and I'm locked out of my account for the time being, but I so needed to comment on this. The Great Escape is one of my dad's favourite films and I have fond memories of watching it with him more than once when I was younger so I've been saving this to read in one.

But this was... guh. I could feel Jarek's hopelessness and sadness through all of it so much. Really, I've never read anything in this fandom that's been this emotionally perfect. My gut twisted when it happened that Jarek died so young and I love it when fics do that to me (in a good way).

My favourite big bang of this year so far by a mile.

That is a comment worth waiting for! Thank you so much!
