Thank you - and hugs - to friends who have sent me little LJ Halloween treats! (And I think, belated thanks are due to a few of you too! ♥ ♥ ♥)

In other news -- here is a (sadly) fuzzy pic of my trick-or-treaters! )

And... I *totally enjoyed* tonight's SPN episode and look forward to watching it again this weekend sometime. \o/

My local resident just-turned-5-year-old (Carter) made me a 12+ page collection of art. (I think he gets his art talent from me!)

(both in ability and choice of artistic subject matter) )

If you know me, you know my love of orthopedic trauma in fic. So it may come as no surprise that of all the local shelter dogs needing a rescue, we've adopted this little guy!

His name is Ben! He was a stray (about a year old) who'd been hit by a car. He broke his leg and needed surgery, but he's doing fine now! He's a pug + beagle mix (aka a 'puggle'!)

Further adventures with wee!Staci...

We have recently discovered a need for gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free cookies! (Also no peanuts/peanut-butter.) I thought I'd share a couple of our successes here (with best wishes for a happy holidays to my LJ friends, and a happy birthmas to my sis [livejournal.com profile] akh1221)! If any of you want to share your own beloved cookie recipes in the comments, please do!

Of course, Staci's dietary restrictions aren't limited to cookie ingredients, but I'm not responsible for her meals. Just her cookies! ;D )

Hey! I'm doing a meme! How did that happen?

It happened because I saw [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons do it, and hers was awesome. Here's how to play!

Comment to this post with "THE VERY NERVE!" (that's all you need do to start, seriously!) and then:
  • I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.

  • You update your journal with the answers to the questions.

  • You can include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions (but only if you want to).

My questions and answers here! )

5 things

I don't normally make personal posts, but I have to admit, when folks on my friends' list share the things in their lives that are making them happy, it makes me happy, too.

So here's 5 things that are making me happy! )

When I think of my friend [profile] daselle  I think the characteristic that stands out most to me is her unselfish compassion, committing her time and talents to various causes she believes in so that people she doesn't even know can have a better life. Every year I resolve to try to follow her example a little more.

A couple years ago, Deb became passionate about breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.  After becoming involved, and raising money in 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2008. Following two surgeries and radiation, she is now planning to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk in 2009 (60 miles) and is accepting donations here.

If anyone on my friends list is interested in helping out, I hope you'll check out her post.

Thanks - and I wish you and your families and friends all good health!

Happy New Year to me!

Well, it feels like a new year.
  • I can't begin to describe what the presidential election results mean to me.  Parts of the experience have moved me to tears this week.  I know there is a lot that needs fixing and it will take time, but I can't remember ever feeling so hopeful about the future.
  • On top of that, the biggest career change of my life has just occurred (for the better, I think).  \o/ \o/ \o/
  • There's exciting family news in progress (Max and Megan learn the baby's sex on Tuesday!).  If it's a girl, I think they should name her after my great-great-grandmother's cousin, Emancipation Proclamation Coggeshall (she was called Prockie) but so far, they are dragging their feet about this.  If it's a boy, they are leaning toward Ian.  Baby is due April Fool's Day.
  • Finally got my Mom's house emptied and sold and have her settled into Assisted Living where she is safe!  This has been such a drawn-out ordeal, which has really made me treasure my brother and three sisters more than ever before.
  • and I'm pretty sure I'm another year older today *g* too.
I'm always amused and pleased when folks write themselves fanfic for their birthdays.  And I had a goal to do the same this year (especially since this particular story is extremely self-indulgent) - but I just couldn't meet this deadline.  But maybe I'm close enough to divulge the working title and draft summary.  (And maybe doing so will make me more committed to finishing it when I get back from my almost 2 week vacation that starts in a few minutes.  We'll see.  The first draft is pretty much done - it  just needs a LOT of work!)

River of Blood
(SPN gen of course, 15-20K words)
Summary:  A summoning ritual backfires. Instead of drawing the restless spirit of Cpl. Leamon Griffith to them, Sam and Dean find themselves catapulted to the side of the young Union soldier, just hours before he goes MIA – in 1863.

Au revoir!

ignore the date of the post - these were taken August 22, 2008, at Pokagon State Park in NE Indiana.

Carter, at 15 months old!   Too bad I didn't capture him smiling - he's a happy-go-lucky kid, with a talent for climbing and mischief!

Vancouver BC - rain or shine, a memorable place to take a vacation!

I had two things I wanted to accomplish on this trip with friends.  I wanted to explore the awesome opportunities the area offers that I can't do around home - white river rafting, whale-watching, kayaking, hiking through forests that surround a glacier-fed lake with mountains in the background.  My report on that part of the trip is here:  Vancouver trip report highlights

But as we explored north, south and east of downtown Vancouver to get to those adventures, I also wanted to swing by places where Supernatural episodes had filmed.

And that's what this trip report is all about. )
