big bang reveals - J2AU!

Since there's no SPN tonight, to console myself I'm going to announce my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang to my friends! [livejournal.com profile] 5rin9 will be creating the art for it! I haven't seen her work before, but she's great at communicating quickly and effectively, is enthused about the subject, and asked great questions! So I'm excited!

Posting date: Thurs June 23

True confessions time - remember that poll I did a little while ago, to see if anyone was familiar with the movie The Great Escape? I wrote (do you believe it?!) a J2AU!

Summary draft:

Under a Vast Sky is inspired by the classic war movie The Great Escape, which in turn is based on a true story. During WWII, hundreds of POWs in a German prison camp planned an audacious mass escape. In the fic, as in the movie, as in real-life, 76 men make it out before the tunnel is discovered. Hitler is enraged, calls for an immediate manhunt, and orders that the recaptured POWs be executed in cold blood. Only three of the men evade capture and reach safety.

In Under a Vast Sky Jarek and Jensen are two downed RAF pilots, who find themselves unexpected bunkmates in Stalag Luft III. Committed to escaping, they are among the 76 who make it out the tunnel on that moonless night in 1944. But just hours after they get out, when they're beginning the dangerous and arduous journey home, secrets come out. They get separated.

After the war, Jarek tracks down his orphaned 7-year-old niece Rosie, and tries to make a home with her in a Polish Resettlement Camp in England. But he's still haunted by the choice Jensen made.

Looking forward to reading this - looks great!

I'm always hoping *you* will read my fic. Wasn't sure if this would be to your taste, but I hope it will!

Oh, gosh. I voted that I'd never seen it! This will be interesting.

One of my beta readers hasn't seen the movie either. I want to make sure that people who haven't won't be confused. I hope you'll like it!

OMG, this story sounds AMAAAAZING. If you can read Wincest for me, I think I can read J2AU for you. :D And I'm not just saying that because I greedily want to read this story right now. ETA: Er, and in case that wasn't clear, I didn't mean you have to read anything I write that is Sam/Dean. I just meant, you have once or twice in the past and I appreciate it. ♥

LOL! You are one of the rare rare writers who can make me want to read Wincest. I may have to tell myself it's AU SPN, but I'm looking forward to yours!

Thanks for the encouragement!

Oh. My. God. I can't wait for this!
I've often thought that the J2 AU Great Escape would be super awesome, simply because the film is so great (and quite slashy) and because the character interactions would be so TERRIFIC. I've spent time thinking how I would do it. But of course, never have! Which makes it all the better that you have.

This is SUCH AN AWESOME THING. If you need beta help at all, I've seen the film literally more than ten times. :) And your synopsis sounds super intriguing as well. :)

Wow - your enthusiasm is catching! Now, I'm excited!

I do have two beta readers who are reviewing it right now (plus experts on some specific aspects to consult), but honestly? I was actually tempted to ask for your input on something... though I'm not sure I want to discuss it on LJ? It's interesting that you mention that the film is quite slashy, because my story is slashy to pretty much the same degree. Which is to say, if you have your slash goggles on you can see it, but if you don't, I think it's gen-safe, too. (Okay, I think it's definitely a little slashier than the movie.)

Labels drive so much of fandom. I've tried to find fics with similar issues, to see how people label them. Pre-slash? non-explicit J2? Warn for tepid slash? LOL... I'm a gen writer who is dipping her toes in J2AU, but I'm honestly comfortable with the text and subtext as is. I just don't know how to label it so people will still give it a try, and then won't be upset because the shower scene (I know you know which one I mean!) didn't go where they wanted!

PS - I made a list today of all the posting dates that I was really looking forward to. So I already know w/o looking it up that your date is at the end! So long to wait!

.... the shower scene... *dies*

I *know*! Right?

I saw that summary and remembered the poll and thought it must be yours. Welcome to the dark side, cookies, etc. :)

[identity profile] harrigan.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's definitely J2AU, it might remain to be seen if someone looking for slash will see it here. (It's mostly pre-slash?)

Oh, my, my my. I was a wondering if you were wading into that pool after your Great Escape post. I couldn't imagine a Sam and Dean fic Great Escape style. I can imagine it as a Jenson and Jared fic or in this case Jarek.:D

Saw the synopsis and said 'that's Harrigan's'.

June 23rd. It's on the google calendar. Happy writing!

You know me! I have a bit of a WWII kink. Wonder where that came from *g*?

Thanks - I am having fun writing! It's one of those rare stories that percolates and simmers and evolves mentally for a year before it gets written. Like my Civil War SPN fic. And maybe those are the ones that end up with the fewest readers, since most everything else I write lately has been to a prompt in a community with a built-in readership, and these are true labors of love that aim specifically at my heart.

But having fun writing is more important than the number of reviews. Right?

Sounds awesome! Have to wait clear until the end of June, eh? I rarely read RPF, but I'll read this!

[identity profile] harrigan.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I hope you'll like it!

Gosh June 23rd...that's not far away at all, the countdown has officially begun!

While I have seen various snippets of The Great Escape I've never actually sat down and watched it all the way through (I know, it's pretty shameful!) but I'm super excited about this, not only because River of Blood is how we first met and where my love for your work all started but because I know as a history buff you're going to do a wonderful job and your passion for the WW2 era will shine through.

I really can't wait... And remember if you need anything let me know. *big hugs*

Yay! One more recruit on my goal to get 17 readers!
